Gentle, powerful, effective and non-invasive

The Bowen Technique

What is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a truly holistic remedial therapy, that is gentle, non-invasive and extremely effective. Bowen can be safely used to treat men, women & children, from newborn babies to the elderly. It can also help to improve the quality of life for the terminally ill. A Bowen treatment affects the body in ways which promote healing, pain relief and recovery of energy.

The Bowen Technique was developed by an Australian, Tom Bowen, born in Geelon, Australia in 1916. The technique was named after him, following his death in the early eighties. Since his death, Bowen has spread vastly over the globe.

How does Bowen work?

The Bowen Technique encourages the body to realign itself, stimulate and rebalance the body's energy flow. The Bowen Technique stimulates the body's own healing process without the need for manipulation or force, an incredibly gentle therapy.

How is the therapy applied?

The practitioner uses thumbs and fingers on precise points on the body, to make small rolling type moves over the muscles and soft tissues, the aim of the moves is to create a disturbance to the muscles. This in turn stimulates energy flow through the muscles. At intervals throughout the treatment the therapist leaves the room for short periods of time. To enable the body time, to rest, relax, absorb and respond to the moves already performed, making the fine adjustments needed to begin the healing process.

How many treatments?

A Bowen Treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes and if preferred the treatment can be performed through light clothing. Treatments are carried out at weekly intervals, two or three treatments is often all that is needed to achieve relief from long term pain. Although chronic conditions may require more. To receive maximum benefit, it is recommended that other physical therapies are not mixed with the Bowen Technique for example, reflexology, massage, physiotherapy.

Conditions which respond to the Bowen treatment?

Headaches, Migraine, Tinnitus, Glue Ear, Hay Fever, Neck Pain, Whiplash, Frozen Shoulder, Digestive Problems, Respiratory Problems, Infant Colic, Carpal Tunnel & RSI, Kidney Problems, IBS, Pelvic Pain, Menstrual Problems, Groin Strain & Calf Strains, Hamstring Problems, Sciatica, Knee Problems, Ankle & Foot Problems, MS, ME, Chronic Fatigue, Aspergers Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Sports Injuries.

Case histories

Boy, aged 10, with aspergers

After his first treatment, he was less anxious and a lot calmer. He found disruptions to his routine easier to deal with and they didn’t upset him so much. At his next visit he jumped up on to the couch, he was looking forward to feeling like he did after first treatment, lighter, calmer and more relaxed.

Man, aged 36, with hamstring problems

A very subtle treatment, with great results. I had been suffering from pain to my right hamstring all week, due to playing football on a heavy pitch.

Gone by the following morning after treatment and I've not had any problems since.
